PART – A

 ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS                                                         5×15= 75

1(a)  (i) Name atleast five mechanical properties of materials.

(ii) In an ic engine the diameter of the piston is 200mm and the pressure inside the cylinder is 0.7 N/mm2 .Find the diameter of the rod,if the tensile or compressive stress for rod is 65N/mm2.

(or)

(b)  Design a sleeve and cotter joint to withstand a tensile load of 60Kn.All parts of the joint are made of same material.the permissible stresses are 60N/mm2 in tension,125N/mm2 in compression and 70N/mm2 in shear.

 

2(a) A mild steel shaft transmits 25Kw at 250rpm.it is carries a central  load of 1200N and is simply supported between the bearings 2.0m apart.Determine the size of the shaft ,if the allowable shear stress is 42Mpa and the bending stress is 56Mpa.What size of the shaft is required,if it is subjected to gradually applied load?

(b)  Design a protective type flange coupling to connect two shaft to transmits 7.5kW at 720rpm.The permissible shear stress for shaft,bolt and key material is 33N/mm2,the permissible crushing strength for the bolt and key materials is 33N/mm2 permissible crushing strength for bolt 60N/mm 2and permissible shear stress for C.I is 15N/mm2.

 

3(a) Design a belt drive based on manufacturing data a flat belt drive to transmit a power of 22kW at a speed of 780 rpm  to an aluminium rolling machine.the speed ratio is 3.the centre distance between the shaft is 3m .Diameter of rolling machine pulley is 1.2m

(or)

(b) Design a v-belt drive using manufacturing data power transmitted=7.5kW,speed of driving pulley=1000rpm,speed of driven pulley=300rpm,diameter of driven pulley=150mm,diameter of  driving pulley=500mm,centre distance=925,service=16hrs/day.

4(a) Journal bearing 300mm long and 150mm dia carries a radial load of 9Kn at 1200rpm.the power lost in friction is 6Kw.Viscosity of oil temperature is 0.018pa-s.Find the diametral clearance.

(or)

(b) Design a suitable journal bearing for a centrifugal pump to withstand a load of 40kN.The diameter and the speed of the journal are 150mm and 900rpm respectively.

5(a) Write the design procedure for hand lever

(or)

(b) A pinion runs at 600rpm drives a gear at a speed ratio of 4:1.Allowable static stress of pinion and gear material is 85N/mm2.pinion has 16 teeth of module 8mm.Teeth are 20 degree F.D system. face width 90mm.Find the power transmitted.
